Each year, ALSO has a cheeky theme, an invisible hand that helps sculpt and shape our programming and, for 2020, it is ‘GAZE’. That's right GAZE!!
Over three transformative days, we’ll be taking a look through the crucial ideas of our time, gazing on the natural world and into the internal world, to consider why we think the way we do.
Our first wave of programming offers the chance to gaze into the future with the award-winning business psychologist, Margaret Heffernan who'll explain how we can chart the future in such times of uncertainty, and on the future of relationships with Prof Julian Savulescu. Prof Sir David Spiegelhalter explains how ‘The Art of Statistics’ can help you gaze on data to get find the truth. You can take a side-eye look at ‘fast fashion’ with Lauren Bravo, view the value in a global slowdown with award-winning social geographer, Prof Danny Dorling and at justice in the legal system with former Chief Crown Prosecutor, Nazir Afzal OBE, while geneticist Dr Adam Rutherord will teach us 'How to Argue With a Racist.'
Our extraordinary music programming which focuses on new music and audio adventures is curated by Also Festival-own Juliet Russell (ITV’s The Voice). She'll be turning your gaze to spellbinding performances by up and coming musicians, such as critically acclaimed folk artist Jasmine Rodgers, balanced with immersive have-a-go experiences including the Also Festival Choir and festival-favourite, Lip Sync Champions.
We'll have dining experiences for everyone. From our ideas-led banquets, pop-up restaurants, cooking demonstrations, tastings and workshops, it’s a feast of programming, all with tasty food at the heart of it, along with a new stage for food demos and tastings. Don't miss our Saturday Night Sensory Dining Experience, Zoe's Ghana Kitchen fusing African food with hospitality on the Friday night and The James Beard Award Winner, James Whetlor heading up our chef-led Saturday lunch cookout extravaganza. Or come together for our festival favourite Balearic Brunch Paella.
Balance all this with many opportunities for rest and recovery with a floating gong bath, candlelit yoga or wild swimming? Sounds too relaxing, there's a heavenly disco made of straw.
Our first wave up of programming is up, with more being added every week. Time to decide to be part of ALSO 2020.
